What factors add up to spine width

  1. Decide the binding method: First confirm whether it's saddle stitch, perfect binding, sewn perfect binding, or hardcover. Bindings without a spine don't need the later calculations.

Step 2 should account for the possibility of adding pages later; step 3 shouldn't simply copy thickness tables found online; step 5 should leave room for one revision, because the flattening of a white dummy and actual mass production can also differ. Spine allowances, costs, and lead times by binding method

Spine treatment isn't a uniform few millimeters for every job; the binding method determines whether there is a spine at all and whether it's flat or rounded. In common 2026 brochure and book projects, saddle stitch is mostly used for short-lead materials with fewer pages, perfect binding and sewn perfect binding for medium-thickness brochures, and hardcover for commemorative albums or yearbooks that need long-term preservation.

Choose based on page count and use case first, then decide how to reserve the spine. If there are very few pages, saddle stitch may save cost; if the book needs to be opened repeatedly over time, sewn perfect binding or hardcover is more reliable, but budget and schedule must be allowed for.

Where this applies and where it doesn't

Spine width applies to all bound items with a flat spine: brochures, books, yearbooks, tender documents, product manuals, hardcover commemorative albums, and some corporate in-house magazines.
