  • Project stage: If still in the concept design phase, the design firm needs to provide a preliminary structural drawing for presentation; when entering the production preparation phase, the printer issues the final die line.

Three-Step Verification Method: Whichever Side Produces the Die Line Must Complete These 3 Steps

To reduce rework, follow the "three-step verification method":

  1. Check the box style and dimensions. Confirm the length, width, height, and paperboard thickness. Corrugated board thickness directly affects the inner dimensions after folding; for example, a five-layer corrugated board differs from a three-layer one by approximately 2–3 mm.
  2. Check the relative position of printed content and die-cut lines. Text and key graphics should be at least 3 mm away from crease lines to avoid visual distortion after folding; bleed should be sufficient as required by the printer, usually 1.5–3 mm.
  3. Prototype verification. Make a sample using the same material and fold it once. This step reveals problems invisible in flat views, such as a lid that is too tight or an insertion tab that does not align.

Take a cosmetic gift box we worked on as an example: the structure was designed with 3mm greyboard during the design phase, but the printer switched to 2mm greyboard before sampling. Because we did not recheck the thickness and adjust the die line, the lid would not close after sampling. We had to revise the drawing overnight, losing 2 extra days.

Common Pitfalls and Acceptance Checklist: Missing One Item Could Scrap the Plate

Common pitfalls related to die lines include the following 5:

  • Providing only a flat layout without a separate die-cut layer, causing the printed artwork to overlap with the die-cut line.
  • Text placed too close to the crease line, causing the text to be folded in after folding.
  • Ignoring paperboard thickness and designing to the outer dimension, making the inner dimension smaller.
  • Using a special-shaped box style that the printer cannot support.
  • Using white cardboard for sampling but switching to corrugated board for mass production, changing the thickness.

After receiving the die line, it is recommended to check off the following items one by one:

  • The length, width, and height dimensions match the requirement sheet;
  • Bleed has been extended;
  • Key text is kept away from crease lines;
  • Layers are labeled for "die-cut line" and "cut line";
  • The file format is AI or PDF, and the die-cut lines have been outlined before output.

Applicable Scenarios and Boundaries: Not Every Graphic Design Project Needs a Die Line

Scenarios that require careful attention to the die line: any packaging box, gift box, corrugated box, or paper bag that requires die-cutting, folding, and forming must have an accurate die line. A design firm does not need to produce it personally, but it must know how to read and verify it.

Scenarios that do not require forcing a die line: single-sided printed flyers, posters, and brochure inside pages without cutting and creasing needs only require standard bleed; if the project is just simple digital proofing, there is no need to struggle over a die line. In such cases, arguing over who should provide the die line only slows down efficiency.
