The logo looks sharp on your phone — why does it blur when printed on pen barrels or embroidered on uniforms?

There is no single fixed number for a brand mark's minimum usage size and clear space that fits every material. In common 2026 project delivery practice, the order of judgment is: first look at the thinner strokes and narrower gaps in the logo graphic, then at which medium it will go on and roughly how far away it will be viewed, and finally work backward to a minimum height and surrounding clear space. As an experience range, standard combination logos with Chinese characters on print materials commonly have a minimum height around 8–15 mm; screen icons commonly 24–32 px; clear space is often 0.5–1× the logo height. Below that range, the odds of later rework or a reprint rise noticeably.

Minimum size and clear space: which two numbers are they?

Minimum usage size means the lower limit at which the logo is still recognizable, details do not blur, and proportions do not distort. Clear space (also called the exclusion zone or safety margin) means the minimum blank area around the logo where no other text, graphic, or border may sit. The two are one set of parameters; defining only one is often not enough.

Many clients treat "it looks clear on the computer" as the standard, but a screen is an emissive display, and edges get smoothed by algorithms when scaling. On print, foil stamping, screen printing, and embroidery, thin lines break, small text blurs, and gaps merge together. So the minimum size should be set by the harsher of the landing methods.

  • Minimum size: usually expressed as logo height or width, for example "height no less than 10 mm".
  • Clear space: usually expressed as a length on one side of the logo or as a ratio, for example "no less than 1/2 the logo height on all sides".
  • Single-color version: its minimum size is usually more permissive than the color version, because there is less color-layering interference.

Why writing just one number leads to endless rework later

A common situation in projects: after the logo is finalized, business cards, name badges, packaging stickers, and app icons each get scaled down into a version, and only when printed do you find some are blurry and some have half cut off. Before delivery, check three things — how wide the thinner strokes are in the vector source file, which process the material uses, and roughly how far away it will be viewed — and write the criteria into the guidelines. Rework and reprints drop a lot.

  • Only one number given: the person executing does not know whether to measure height or width, or from which edge to measure.
  • No extreme-case illustration: without running the logo at its minimum size, viewers can only imagine it.
  • Versions not separated: a horizontal version can scale very small, while vertical and combination versions often cannot; sharing one number leads to errors.

Working backward with two rulers is steadier than deciding by overall height

The logic of this method: minimum size is not determined by how big the logo is as a whole, but jointly by the most fragile details in the graphic and the process it will face. So measure inside first, then outside, and finally add margin for the medium.

  1. Measure the fine parts: find the thinnest strokes, the narrowest gaps, and the sharpest corners in the graphic and note them; these are the hard constraints on shrinking.
  2. Measure viewing distance: business cards, pen barrels, and app icons are close-range; storefront signs and vehicle wraps are long-range. The farther the distance, the smaller the acceptable minimum size — provided the outline features are still recognizable.
  3. Add medium corrections: offset printing is relatively forgiving; screen printing, foil stamping, embroidery, and pad printing are pickier about thin lines and usually need to be one step larger than offset.
  4. Write it into the guidelines: give minimum sizes and clear-space ratios separately for the color, single-color, vertical, and horizontal versions, and attach an illustration of the logo shrunk to its limit.

Each step has different pitfalls: measuring only height and not details; mixing screen pixels with print millimeters; applying digital proof results to screen printing; writing only numbers without an illustration, so the person executing cannot tell from where to where to measure.

Comparing approaches: set by overall height, or work backward from thin strokes

Both practices are used in projects; the difference lies mainly in what they suit and the later cost.

  • Approach A: set by overall height — simple and easy to communicate; suits logos with uniform stroke weights and a simple structure. Once the graphic has many details, it easily produces "we followed the guidelines and it is still blurry".
  • Approach B: work backward from thin strokes and medium — steadier for complex graphics, small materials, and special processes; the cost is that you have to measure and test up front, and write more detailed guidelines.

A checkable comparison: organizing the guidelines for Approach B usually takes an extra half day to a day, and commonly reduces 1–3 later rounds of reprinting or revisions. If the brand only goes onto one or two scenarios, Approach A is enough; if it will later spread to a dozen-plus materials such as packaging, name badges, icons, and storefront signs, Approach B is preferable, with the limit illustration delivered alongside. The two are not right versus wrong, but a trade-off between precision and cost.

A constraint from one delivery site: small materials and embroidery arriving at the same time

There was a batch of materials that had to land simultaneously: name badges, pen barrel stickers, and uniform embroidery. The constraint was that embroidery thread is thick and available colors are limited, while the space left for the logo on the uniform was small. The approach was to make a round of small samples before confirming the guidelines, shrinking the logo to the proposed minimum size and embroidering it directly; the result was that thin strokes merged into one mass on the fabric and gaps were filled by thread. So we switched to a simplified logo for small sizes and adjusted the uniform embroidery size from 10 mm to the typical range of about 18–22 mm. The cost was an extra half day of adjustment and one sample fee; what it saved was the time of re-embroidering and scrapping a batch of uniforms.

Where it applies and where it does not

This checking method suits projects that are currently creating or have already finished a brand identity and are preparing to land it on multiple materials, especially clients who must work with different processes such as offset printing, screen printing, and embroidery at the same time.

  • Suits: writing VI application guidelines, packaging and labels, name badges and business cards, app icons and social avatars, storefront signs and trade show materials.
  • Suits: when the same criteria must be sent to multiple suppliers for checking, minimum size and clear space are the two items that save communication cost.
  • Not needed: when the logo is only used on web or screen at fixed sizes, one set of screen pixel values is enough; there is no need to calculate again in print millimeters.
  • Not needed: when the project is still at the concept proposal stage and the logo may be overturned and redone; there is no need to rush into setting limit sizes.
  • Not needed: when it is a one-off single-sheet material handled from start to finish by the same designer, the size can simply be marked in the file.

One-sentence boundary: whether the logo will be shrunk very small and whether it will switch to different processes is the watershed for deciding whether to set these two numbers in advance. If neither will happen, you do not need to add another round of work for it.

Frequently asked questions

If the logo's minimum height is set at 10 mm, does that work for all materials?

Not necessarily. 10 mm is only an experience starting point; screen printing, embroidery, and foil stamping usually need to be enlarged, and logos with many graphic details may also need to be larger.

Does clear space always have to be calculated as a multiple of the logo height?

The multiple is just an easy-to-remember expression; the core is ensuring no other visual elements intrude on the surrounding area. For horizontal logos, left and right clear space often needs to be a bit larger than top and bottom.

Can app icons and business card logos share one minimum size?

They cannot be shared directly. The two use different units and viewing distances — icons in pixels, business cards in millimeters — so they must be marked separately, each with its own shrink check.

After the logo is shrunk, does it have to be redrawn?

Not necessarily. If the thin strokes and gaps hold up, the vector can simply be scaled down; if they do not, a common practice is to make a simplified logo dedicated to small sizes.

If the guidelines state only one minimum size, is that enough for execution?

Usually not. At minimum, the horizontal, vertical, and single-color versions should be written separately, with an illustration of the logo at its shrinking limit, so the person executing knows how to measure each edge.
